What is a Tan?
Why Do We Tan?
Melanin is a pigment that colors your hair, eyes, and skin and is also an effective absorber of light. By producing melanin, your skin tries to prevent further damage by blocking out the UV rays.
Is a Tan Good?
Many people associate that getting a tan is a sign of healthy skin and provides additional protection from the sun's harmful rays. In reality, getting a tan signifies the damage of your skin cell's DNA and its attempt to repair it by producing melanocytes. Also, the extra melanin that you receive from a tan will not make that much of a difference; it only provides a SPF factor of 2 to 4.
